LIVE: Sudhanshu Trivedi Targets Rahul Gandhi Over SIR Row
NEW DELHI: The political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress has intensified over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi launching a fresh attack on Rahul Gandhi.
Addressing a press conference, Trivedi questioned the Congress party's opposition to the SIR exercise and accused its leadership of creating unnecessary controversy around the electoral process. He argued that the revision was intended to ensure accuracy and transparency in voter lists by identifying duplicate, ineligible and missing entries.
Taking direct aim at Rahul Gandhi, Trivedi criticised the Congress leader's approach towards democratic institutions and accused the opposition of repeatedly questioning constitutional authorities instead of raising concerns through established procedures.
Trivedi also questioned the Congress's claims regarding alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. He pointed out that political parties have the opportunity to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to monitor the revision process and raise objections wherever necessary.
The BJP leader maintained that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) play an important role in verifying voter details and ensuring that eligible citizens are not deprived of their voting rights. He suggested that Congress should examine the functioning of its own organisational machinery if it believes discrepancies have occurred.
The Congress, meanwhile, has continued to raise concerns over the SIR exercise, alleging that the process could affect genuine voters and questioning the Election Commission's handling of electoral roll revisions.
The growing political exchange highlights the widening differences between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over electoral transparency, institutional accountability and democratic safeguards.
With both parties sharpening their positions, the SIR controversy is increasingly becoming a major political flashpoint, adding another dimension to the ongoing confrontation between the government and opposition.
